To say our weekend in Vancouver was a dream would be an understatement. We left with full bellies, full hearts, and completely relaxed. Perhaps our weekend of fun was significantly more low key than most would desire, but for us, it was needed. This post will be short and sweet and to the point, giving you a little peak into what we did + some ideas for adventuring to Vancouver on a weekend getaway!
WHERE WE STAYED
Nick booked us the most beautiful minimalist Airbnb ever. Nestled in the heart of Gastown, it was an easy walk to and from shops, cafes, and restaurants. Wood beams and brick walls framed mid century modern furniture and aesthetics. Sahra was a wonderful host, responding to any questions we had quickly. We actually spent our first evening in, dining on cheese, chocolate, and wine while playing Scrabble (Game lovers! No shame!) We would highly recommend this place for your weekend away!
WHAT WE DID
We received the BEST recommendations of shops to visit and activities to partake in via our Instagram. Thank you! We ended up simply exploring the city by foot, bopping in and out of perfectly curated shops. Here are a few places we especially loved:
OLD FAITHFUL SHOP
This sweet little home goods store was well stocked with the most adorable pottery, books, and knick knacks you ever did see. We were impressed with the design of this space, as well as the variety of price points. We ended up purchasing a little terracotta plant holder and couldn’t be more pleased with our find!
This shop was an ethical enthusiasts dream! We discovered this shop in passing and were surprised to see countless ethical brands we love lining the shelves. Most notable? Nettle’s Tale has their own swim line, ethically made in Vancouver, BC. If you love ethical shopping, but would rather try pieces on in store, we highly recommend dropping by.
COMMUNITY THRIFT & VINTAGE
Oh, what a vintage lovers paradise! What options! We perused rack after rack of beautifully curated vintage sweaters, blouses, and gowns. With reasonable prices + a vast selection of garments, you’re sure to find something to treasure!
Though it was a recommended shop, we actually never intended to visit due to time constraints. However, on our walk to fetch our car, we happened upon this space and quickly stopped in. Erin was crafting bags when we arrived and kindly showed us around the space. Many of her pieces are made from recycled leather pants and upholstery, small imperfections giving each piece charm. Beyond the arrangement of totes and wallets, we managed to thumb through several racks of beautiful vintage frocks. A simple shop you won’t want to miss!
Hey Jude was nestled between shops on Abbot Street, an area we’d already passed through on our walk to brunch. Funny enough, we never spotted this sweet little vintage boutique, but thankfully we made an intentional visit to this space later in the day. This shop was, hands down, the most beautiful store we visited in Vancouver. Colorful vintage garments and minimalist home goods stood out against the simple white + wood aesthetics of the space. We may not have purchased any pieces this time around, but can’t stop perusing their Instagram shop with all the heart eyes.
THE FOUND & THE FREED
Ever since moving into our new little apartment, home goods have been at the forefront of our minds (okay, okay: the forefront of Emily’s mind). On our way to dinner, we quickly turned the car around after spying this adorable storefront nestled on a back road of Vancouver. Once inside, we took our time perusing a verity of vintage Americana style decor. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for unique pieces to make your house a home.
WHAT WE ATE
Eating was arguably our favorite part of this trip. We love food. Nick researched the Vancouver food scene before our visit to select some fun restaurants for birthday festivities. Oh, did he find a few gems.
This eatery was recommended twice via Instagram, so we knew we needed to give it a visit (plus we LOVE Mexican food, win win!) Oh my yum. We ordered margaritas, nachos, and wings, much to our taste bud’s delight. The atmosphere was casual and low key, a perfect happy hour and start to our stay.
HOLD UP, WAIT A MINUTE: We stumbled upon this itty bitty bakery all by chance. Thank goodness for wandering back streets after parking our car a few miles a way to save $ on street parking (#budgetlife!) This shop was obviously treasured by locals, as customers bopped in and out quickly with a freshly baked loaf + cup of brew. We each ordered the Kenya pour over, sipping between bites of hot matcha buns filled with a brown sugar & chestnut puree. Do yourself a favor and wander your way to this bakery! Worth every penny.
On Saturday, we made our way to this French bistro for brunch. We ordered Croque Misure and, being the Americans we are, had to try their burger of the day (because burgers and brunch obviously pair perfectly together!) The sophisticated atmosphere was met with reasonable prices and friendly faces. Our appetites were satisfied and bellies stayed full until dinner several hours later. The space filled up quickly with hungry customers, so we were thankful we arrived before the crowds!
GLORY JUICE CO
After a night of wine, cheese, and chocolate, we knew we needed a little pick-me-up that wasn’t caffeine infused. We dropped by Glory Juice Co for some freshly pressed goodness and felt 100% rejuvenated for the rest of our adventures. Though their juices come in plastic bottles, we still managed to try out our new reusable metal straws! Definitely a quick and easy stop in if you need a little refresher!
Is it too bold to say this may have been the best meal either of us has ever tasted? Too bold or too true? We waited an hour and a half to get a small table at The Acorn and cannot recommend this restaurant more highly. Once inside, the candle lit tables and symphony of conversation created the most cozy atmosphere for our dining experience. We each ordered a cocktail, the Brussels Sprouts as an appetizer, the Harvest and the Halloumi as mains, and the Plum for desert. Dare we even try to describe the flavors? No. We just can’t. It was too amazing! This is a MUST for your visit to Vancouver. (Tip: Arrive early to get your name on the list – they do not take reservations. Head a few shops down to Portland Craft for a stout while you wait!)
