Here’s a little fun fact for y’all: at one point in my life, I had a strong desire to design men’s fashion. Fascinating, right? During my first few months of university, I pursued a degree in clothing and textiles. Upon entering design classes, I couldn’t help but gravitate toward the clean lines and tailored aesthetics most notably seen in menswear. During one quarter, I somehow managed to convince my group to focus our culminating project on men’s fashion. A bit passionate, you’d say? We all received A’s and I was quite pleased with my suggestion.
Those memories have since faded and I eventually switched majors the following year. Not surprisingly, my love of button ups, boxy blazers, and menswear-inspired garments has not ceased. I’ve been known to steal Nick’s shirts from time to time and even purchase garments from the men’s section at our local thrift stores. The issue? Fit. You see, as much as I love a chunky over-sized sweater or snagging my husband’s flannel, I’m quite petite. How to wear the style I love without swimming in fabric? The solution happened to find me.
When Tradlands reached out for a fall style collaboration, I felt a wave of nostalgia wash over me. Their tagline? “Designed for her. Inspired by him.” Silhouettes I knew I loved, but tailoring that fit my frame.
I chose to try out one of their classic, raw silk button ups, The Lena Noir. Simple design. A beautiful balance between structure and comfort, a tailored and relaxed fit. Too, this shirt is quite versatile. I ordered an XS and still managed to tie a simple knot for a cropped look. Layer it under sweaters and dresses in the winter, or leave it unbuttoned over a well-loved graphic tee with some high waisted denim.
As my personal style has begun to solidify more and more over the last year, I’ve noticed a habit I feel many can relate to: we often purchase statement pieces, but regularly grab for classic garments for the every day. Simple, timeless pieces fill wardrobe gaps and complement bolder, busy garments we often gravitate toward purchasing.
So, what’s the Tradlands story? Why raw silk anyway?
“Silk is a magical fabric. It’s naturally hypoallergenic and non-toxic. While synthetics can take 600 years to breakdown and release chemicals into the environment, silk biodegrades in 1 to 2 years. It spans seasons, feeling cool and light on the skin in the summer and providing warmth and insulation in the winter. Silk is adaptable, sustainable, and beautiful.”
Since entering this journey of only shopping ethically, I’ve learned that the textiles you choose to purchase and clothe your body in are deeply important. I often have to laugh at myself: If I am even moderately concerned about what I choose to put inside my body via food and drink, how have I become so thoughtless about the fabrics touching my skin, the largest organ of my body! Sigh. I’m always learning over here, friends.
Beyond deep thoughtfulness in the textiles they craft their garments from, Tradlands is easily a forerunner in the arena of ethical style. Tradlands began manufacturing their garments in the USA, eventually expanding production to other countries. Of course, they only partner with manufacturers who ensure the highest ethical standards are upheld. When you purchase a garment from Tradlands, you know you’re supporting living wages, fair working conditions, and overall empowerment for their production teams.
“We now partner with boutique clothing manufacturers and all over the world – United States, Mexico, Italy, China – who love their craft and care about the people they employ. They hold social welfare and production quality to the highest standards. We are proud to work with them and share their work with you. Together, we employ adults who are paid a living wage, work in bright, clean and airy environments, and choose to come to work every day. We visit our production facilities regularly to assure a happy and healthy environment.”
Blogging about slow fashion has quickly transitioned from an idea, to a lifestyle, to a deep privilege. With countless stories of deception, exploitation, and injustice ripping across our news feeds on the daily, I am honored to share about a company producing hope within such a dark industry. If you’ve always loved a clean silhouette, impeccable quality, and often find yourself perusing the men’s section, I’d like to nudge you toward Tradlands: the best closet essentials you’ll ever own.
