Let’s get one thing straight: I’m as shaky and as they come in relation to heels. Granted, I’m actually pretty great at running in a pair of stilettos (random fact). However, the day to day, casual strolling, looking normal business is not one of my strengths. In fact, I don’t think I’ll ever master the art of walking in heels. Being the crafty little thinker I am, I decided rather than walk a long, flat road forever, I would simply outsmart the heeled community: I’ll still invest in shoes that give my 5’4″ frame some lift, but I’ll be overly selective about which pairs get to cozy up into my closet.
Enter platform wedges: ample height, but completely wearable. I mean, you’re practically just pumping the ground up a few inches, and voilà! Heels that don’t make you walk like a baby giraffe taking its first steps (too far? Or too correct?)
Alright, let’s back up (slowly, since we’re talking about heels). Nisolo has been a brand crush of mine for months. As an ethical enthusiast, or just a human being in general, who couldn’t get excited about a company that not only pays their workers beyond a fair wage, but also provides them with safe working conditions and healthcare?
If you’re new around this space, I’m bummed to inform you that most fashion companies these days do not treat their employees with dignity. As of 2017, the minimum wage for Cambodian garment workers was raised to $153 per month. Interestingly, the Asia Floor Wage Alliance has calculated that a living wage for a Cambodian garment worker should be roughly $400 per month. Is this vast divergence in compensation okay? Well, no. So what exactly is a living wage? Around the world, governments set a minimum wage they believe citizens of their country should be able to live off of. Sadly, it’s not enough. Most times, not even close. A living wage is enough financial security to cover basic human needs and then some.
When it came time to choose an ethically made heel that would keep me feeling stylish, sophisticated, and most importantly, sturdy, I chose to purchase from Nisolo. I eagerly selected the (much anticipated) Sarita Wooden Wedge in whiskey and couldn’t be more pleased! In my opinion, they run true to size and are exceptionally comfortable. The unique wooden base makes these wedges amazingly versatile! Dress ’em up with a flowy sundress for a summer wedding or wear ’em casual with jeans and a blouse for a weekend BBQ.
If you’re in the market for a sturdy summer shoe, the Sarita Wooden Wedge could be your perfect fit!
Till next time,
NOTE: This post was not sponsored by Nisolo. I personally purchased these sandals. However, you can support A Day Pack by shopping through the affiliate Sarita Wooden Wedge link on this page. As always, I will only ever review pieces and products that are ethically made and match my aesthetic. Thanks for reading along!
