If you’ve been following our blog for a few months, you may know a bit of our story. We moved to South Korea two months after getting married (are we crazy?!) During our two years abroad, we miraculously paid off $50K in student loans and are now debt free! To celebrate this exciting feat, we saved some extra pennies and adventured to Bali, Indonesia. Guys, this trip still regularly comes up in our conversations! It was that amazing of a getaway.
We blogged about the first half of our trip, Adventures in Ubud, but never made it around to posting the second half. Perhaps we’re still in denial that this trip is over! Or perhaps we were a little lazy at picking out the best photos from the zillions we snapped. Either way, the wait is over.
For the second half of our Indonesian adventure, we took a boat over to the Gili Islands. We’d heard Gili Taragwan was the party island, Gili Meno was the honeymoon island, and that Gili Air was the perfect combination of relaxation with a bit of night life and adventure to keep you entertained! We stayed at the Scallywags Mango Retreat and it was a dream. Outdoor bathroom, an enclosed front patio for reading and drinking coffee, and a pool shaded by a mango tree just beyond our door. We walked to the beach front everyday to take in our fill of snacks, refreshing beverages, and of course, swimming! Because this quaint island is quite tiny, we even managed to bike around it in an hour. With perfect sunset views of Lombok while eating dinner each night, do you blame us for missing this getaway daily!?
After we took an uneasy boat ride back to the main island (motion sickness does not mix well with small fast boats, amiright?), we ventured off to stay near Balangan Beach. With only two nights at this little getaway, we spent the majority of our time lounging beachfront and swimming to our hearts content. Each morning we were welcomed with a plate of fresh dragon fruit, pineapple, coffee, and banana pancakes. We found our villa on Air bnb and loved the simplicity of the space, not to mention the affordable price! 😉 On our final day, we took a motorbike over to Ulawatu to watch the surf and explore a bit longer. The views at this location were breathtaking!
If you ever have the opportunity to travel, we couldn’t more highly recommend Bali. Though airfare can be quite steep, staying in Indonesia is much more affordable than you’d expect. By avoiding big name resorts and opting for simple home stays and villas, we managed to enjoy this tropical getaway and not stress about finances.
Okay, enough of the chatter! Here is a little picture diary of our adventures on Gili Air & Balangan Beach! As avid travelers, we know we’ll be back someday.
